If you're writing a character who belongs to a minority group that you yourself do not belong to, it is highly recommended that you hire a sensitivity reader to check your manuscript for any inadvertent stereotypes or harmful representations.
I am available for sensitivity reading, reading for the following:
- Disability and Chronic Illness Representation: Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Type III, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, Dysautonomia, Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, chronic pain, M.E/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Lyme Disease, Encephalitis, PANS/PANDAS, Raynaud's phenomenon.
- Mental Health Representation: OCD (severe, moderate, and mild), ARFID, anxiety, psychosis, hallucinations (auditory, visual, and tactile), delusional thoughts.
- Sexuality and Orientation: asexuality, ace-spec, heteromantic asexuality.
I can be hired to work with you at many different stages, from when you are planning your manuscript (to discuss your ideas and how you want to include these characters) to when you have completed a solid draft, at which point I can read the text and annotate your manuscript, letting you know of any problematic areas and solutions to these problems. I can also write up a detailed report on your inclusion of disability/illness/asexuality, including suggestions for improving the representation.
Sensitivity reading is priced on a case-by-case basis. Please get in touch for a quotation.
